Patricia L. Harris Resigns
as Alabama State Librarian

After serving as director of the Alabama Public Library Service in Montgomery since January 1992, Patricia L. Harris resigned June 18 during the agency's executive board meeting.

"Although I've had six and a half wonderful years here," Harris told American Libraries, "I've been in state library work for 18 years in five states and in two, as state librarian. I could do with a lot less stress."

The high point of Harris's APLS tenure came during Bill and Melinda Gates' successful February visit for the Gates Library Foundation that allowed public libraries to become active participants in the Alabama virtual library two years earlier than expected: 95% of 278 facilities are connected to the Internet for public access.

"I don't plan to abandon library work at all," she said. "I want to go back to the provision of direct library service in public libraries."
