New Flushing Library Features
Largest Children's Room in Queens

Queens Borough Public Library Director Gary Strong and Borough President Claire Shulman were among the dignitaries at the June 19 ribbon-cutting for the new $35-million Flushing Library, which claims the largest children's room in Queens. The 76,000-square-foot facility also contains more than 350,000 books, periodicals, videos, CDs, and other items, as well as 80 computers for customer use and 300 seats prewired for laptops.

The new library, which replaces a cramped facility that was located in an old furniture store, features an expanded Adult Learning Center offering English conversation groups and literacy programs, and an International Resource Center with collections on the history, literature, and cultures of the world.

The branch—reportedly the nation's busiest within the nation's busiest library system—enjoyed a hearty spate of preopening publicity, including an enthusiastic May 31 New York Times feature that highlighted the library's special services to its multinational community in which some 100 languages are spoken.
