Miami-Dade Director Mary Somerville Announces RetirementAfter serving as director of the Miami-Dade Public Library system for nearly five years, Mary R. Somerville has announced her retirement, effective July 24. Somerville plans to move to Louisville, Kentucky, to "enjoy life and pursue some long-delayed creative writing projects." While director, Somerville oversaw the reopening of hurricane-damaged libraries; renovated or enhanced one-third of the system's branches; inaugurated PELICAN, the library's Web-based automated system; and served as 1996–97 ALA president. Although hopeful for the system's continued growth, Somerville warned that the library "must continue to meet the literacy, educational, and business information needs of Miami-Dade's growing communities, which require new libraries as well as the constant renewal of existing facilities and collections." The library has launched a national search for a new director, with the goal to name Somerville's successor prior to her departure. Posted June 1, 1998. |
