Loudoun County Supervisors Vote
to Fund Lawsuit Defense
The Loudoun County (Va.) Board of Supervisors voted June 3 to spend $10,000 to continue defending the county library's Internet filtering policy. Supervisors said that the allocation, along with $30,000 already applied from library funds, would finance the legal fight through August, reported the Washington Post.
The amount approved by the supervisors falls far short of the $100,000 sought by the library's trustees, but Supervisor Steven D. Whitener (R-Sugarland Run) said the board would consider an additional request if the suit were not resolved by August. "This is a public safety issue," said Whitener. "We have an obligation to protect the public safety."
The Internet policy has been challenged by a citizens group called Mainstream Loudoun, with support from the American Civil Liberties Union and People for the American Way.
