Bookstore Continues to Fight
Kenneth Starr Book Subpoena

Washington bookstore Kramerbooks says it will appeal U.S. District Court Judge Norma Holloway Johnson's decision to enforce an order to provide independent counsel Kenneth Starr with information on purchases made by Monica Lewinsky.

Although Judge Holloway narrowed the scope of Starr's original subpoena, she refused Kramerbooks' request to quash it. The bookstore plans to take the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals and is asking for a stay of the judge's order, the Washington Post reported May 29.

Co-owner Bill Kramer said he wants Starr to try other means of obtaining the information before investigating book purchases. "We believe they have not exhausted avenues that do not threaten the First Amendment and privacy," he told the Post.

The original subpoena was condemned by ALA and other groups, who filed a sealed amicus brief April 2 supporting Kramerbooks' motion to quash the subpoena.
