After 12 years of service—the last two embroiled in an often contentious battle over age-neutral access policies—Medina County (Ohio) District Library Director Bob Smith announced June 4 that he is resigning at the end of the month. Although he offered the perennial "to pursue other opportunities" reason for his departure, opponents of the library's policy of offering unfiltered Internet access to children have been quick to claim victory.
In a posting on the Publib listserv June 8, Michelle Yezerski of Citizens for the Protection of Children (CPC) said, "The local papers won't print the whole story but the larger newspapers and various community residents know the 'other reasons' why he is 'resigning.'"
Smith has, however, been quite successful in rallying board and community support to resist CPC's efforts to get the library to install filtering software: Last year, a Medina library tax levy passed with 57.2% of the vote.
