Akron-Summit County (Ohio) Public Library officials announced plans for six new or renovated branches as the first phase in a five-year expansion program. Last year, voters approved an $80-million bond issue to pay for the expansion of 15 of the 17 branches as well as the main library. It will be the "most ambitious project the library has ever undertaken," library board President Gary Rosen told the May 22 Akron Beacon-Journal.
New buildings are planned for branches in Green and Mogadore, and the Ellet branch in Akron, while existing structures will be renovated in Nordonia Hills and Akron's Wooster and East branches. All six sites are scheduled for completion in the fall of 1999.
