Texas School District Unplugs Filter

After voicing their displeasure with the reliability of N2H2's Bess Internet filter, trustees of the Grand Prairie (Tex.) Independent School District voted 5-3 against installing the blocking software districtwide, the Dallas Morning News reported July 10.

Their decision comes some six months after educators began using the program in two high, three middle, and five elementary schools, at a cost of some $10,000 altogether. During that time, Media Instructional Technology Facilitator Belinda Jacks told board members, Bess precipitated prolonged system crashes and gave parents "a false sense of security."

"Maybe Bess isn't what you need," Dallas Association of Decency Executive Director Dan Panetti conceded, noting that he was able to access one site he deemed inappropriate in a filtered 45-minute Internet session. Nonetheless, Panetti insisted the board find an alternative block because "I am not even computer savvy, but if I can find it, then [the students] can find it."
