New Jersey, South Carolina Libraries Score
More State Support

The new fiscal year brought with it additional support for public libraries in New Jersey and South Carolina. Garden State libraries received $1 million extra in per-capita state aid; the New Jersey State Library won $500,000 to buy more books and launch Saturday hours; the New Jersey State Library for Technology Services received $450,000 for enhancements; and the Library for the Blind and Handicapped got $479,000 for upgrades. NJSL spokesperson Cindy Warrick credited State Librarian Jack Livingstone with persistently making the case to legislators with copious statistics.

In South Carolina, the FY1999 budget includes $1.5 million to fund DISCUS, a virtual library that will add every public school to a network that already encompasses almost every public library there, Ann Addy, communications director for the state library, told American Libraries. Addy explained that the funding victory is the culmination of several years of "working at local levels to educate their representatives" about the benefits of DISCUS.
