Morgan Library Gains Pierre Matisse ArchivesNinety years of papers meticulously collected by famed Manhattan dealer Pierre Matisse documenting 20th-century art in New York, including such masters as Miro, Chagall, Dubuffet, Mondrian, and Pierre's father Henri, have been given to the Pierpont Morgan Library. In addition to catalogs from more than 300 exhibitions at Matisse's gallery, the windfall includes about 2,000 letters from famed artists, some fancifully illustrated, according to the July 8 New York Times. Morgan director Charles Pierce Jr. told the paper, "The Morgan usually moves in a slow way, but with this collection we have rollerbladed into the 20th century." Though letters between Pierre and his father won't be freely available until 2008, Pierre's widow said she considered it propitious that Henri was in France while his son was in New York, forcing correspondence. "The letters will give a very different view about their relationship than people think." Posted July 13, 1998. |
