Jersey City Library Staff Protest Privatization PlansJersey City (N.J.) Free Public Library staff members turned out on picket lines and at a city council meeting June 24 to protest plans to turn over library operations to Library Systems and Services, Incorporated. The Jersey Journal reported that union heads and library employees, as well as State Librarian John Livingstone, were among the scores of speakers who urged the council to block the privatization effort. Employees also presented petitions of 8,000 signatures asking that any privatization plan be put to a referendum. Earlier in the day, union members held an informational picket in front of the system's main library. Staff see the proposal as union-busting: Although the city promises to maintain salaries and benefits of current employees, there would be a second payroll of staff hired by LSSI. Trustee Greg Corrado, a backer of the plan, has said no staff will be dismissed and that civil service rules protecting workers will be observed. Posted July 6, 1998. |
