Clinton Gives Beijing University 500 BooksPresident Clinton donated a collection of over 500 books to Beijing University's American Studies Reference Collection June 29 before thousands of students and faculty. At a ceremony in front of the new Beida Library during his nine-day China visit, Clinton said, "We are proud of our historic relationship with this university. I hope these books will help to further our friendship for another generation," CNN reported. University President Chen Jia'er accepted the gift, which included the Library of America series and other social studies titles. Clinton "personally" handed two books to Jia'er, his wife's It Takes a Village and his own Between Hope and History. "Now, if you're trying to decide which one to read first," he quipped to much laughter and applause, "I should tell you that in America her book sold a lot more copies than mine did." On the Shanghai leg of their trip, the president urged a partnership between the Shanghai Library and major U.S. research libraries on a radio program June 30, and the first lady promoted women's rights in a speech at the library the following day.
