Capitol Hill Rally Urges Rapid
E-Rate Implementation

Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) led members of Congress, educators, and students in an "E-rate Rally" on Capitol Hill July 23. "Thirty-thousand schools and libraries have applied for e-rate funding and now are waiting for the government to honor its commitment," said Rush. "With the ever-growing importance of the Internet in commerce and education, our government should be increasing its efforts to help disadvantaged communities get online."

Other legislators taking part in the rally included Reps. Major Owens (D-N.Y.), William J. Pascrell (D-N.J.), Albert Wynn (D-Md.), Lois Capps (D-Calif.), Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Donald Payne (D-N.J.), and Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.).

Also speaking were Karen Hauptman, a ninth-grader from Bethesda, Maryland, who has organized a student activist group, People for Internet Education, and Chicago actress Suzzanne Douglas, star of TV's The Parent 'Hood, who said, "Congress must keep its promise and provide children with the tools they need to be educated today."
