A resolution calling for the resignation of the Atlanta-Fulton County (Ga.) Public Library System's board of trustees resulted in a tie vote July 15 when it was brought to the county commission by Commissioner Bob Fulton. One member was absent, leaving the vote stalled at 3-3.
The July 16 Atlanta Journal-Constitution said that the action was a result of a petition signed by more than 200 library employees who doubted that the current trustees would hire a well-qualified candidate to replace Julie Hunter, who resigned in May after complaining about the board's micromanagement. Ella Gaines Yates was appointed interim director May 28.
The resolution will be considered again in the last week of July. It calls for reducing the number of trustees from 17 to seven and replacing them with "leaders and library patrons chosen from the business and neighborhood communities," with each commissioner appointing one member.
