Multiple-Card Scam Discovered at Hennepin County LibraryThe generous 100-item-limit borrowing privileges accorded patrons of Hennepin County (Minn.) Library may have proved too tempting to a Crystal, Minnesota, man. Johnny Elk, 24, has pled guilty to selling some $7,000 worth of HCL books, CDs, and computer games he borrowed in 1996 using multiple library cards issued to at least nine aliases. Elk could be sentenced to as much as 21 months in prison by mid-February, according to HCL Public Services Division Manager Janet Kinney. She said "the real hero" in the case is Ron Lasner of the Shinders used-bookstore chain, who became suspicious when an unwitting individual offered some 80 items for resale late last year, most of which still bore library markings. HCL officials soon traced the items to Elk's multiple accounts. Posted January 12, 1998. |
