Library Board Examines Low Circ "Turnover"Worried about what board President Samuel Greeley calls low "turnover" among the library's circulating items, the trustees of the Frank L. Weyenberg Library of Mequon-Thiensville, Wisconsin, plan to overhaul selection policies and procedures. The board has concluded that Weyenberg's holdings circulate an average of less than two times a year because the 94,000-item collection lacks "the right mix of books." Their theory is undocumented, however; Director Alice Sedgwick told American Libraries her staffers have thus far been unable to identify underused collection areas as repeatedly requested by trustees, and cannot find a public librarian in the state who can coax circulation-data breakdowns from their Dynix systems, either. Nonetheless, board members are calling for the library to heed its patrons' acquisitions input. That request puzzles Sedgwick, who says she has repeatedly told trustees, "We do listen to our patrons." Posted January 12, 1998. |
