Indiana Considers Mandating Filters

On January 8, a bill was introduced into the Indiana Senate that would withhold state funding from public libraries that offer unfiltered Internet access.

Senate Bill 82 states that library boards that want state funding must establish written policies "identifying Internet sites or types of Internet sites that may not be accessed by library patrons using library software [and] block access" to those URLs. If passed, the law would go into effect September 1.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Governmental and Regulatory Affairs.
