Funding Shortage for San Diego PLA report by the San Diego city manager's office has identified a serious shortfall in the financing plan to construct and operate a new downtown library. The new facility, in the planning stages for more than 20 years, would replace the 44-year-old, crowded Central Library, according to the January 18 San Diego Union-Tribune. Deputy City Manager Bruce Herring reported that the $103.5 million available is about $9 million short for the existing design and construction of the eight-story building. City Council support has waned after the announcement, with some members arguing in favor of branch-library funding or a ballpark for the Padres. Mayor Susan Golding, a longtime library booster, told reporters that she intends to win council approval for the project and will schedule a council vote for February 3. Posted January 26, 1998. |
