Ventura County to Cut 15 PositionsThe Ventura County (Calif.) Library Services Agency plans to cut 15 positions in order to maintain extended hours and improve efficiency, the Los Angeles Times reported January 24. The cuts are part of a reorganization of the troubled system that gave local communities greater control over the branches (see American Libraries, August 1997, p. 23). Under the plan, which must be approved by county officials in February, 34 workers, from office assistants to senior librarians, will receive layoff notices, but they will be eligible to apply for 19 positions being created in the reorganization. The cuts will leave the system with 52 full-time employees, fewer than half the number a few years ago, the Times reported. Posted February 2, 1998. |
