Pooh Is New York's HoneyThe original Winnie the Pooh and his stuffed-animal pals Kanga, Eeyore, Tigger, and Piglet will remain at the New York Public Library, following a test of wills last month that involved Congress and the British Parliament. Donated to NYPL in 1987, the fuzzy friends rested in a climate-controlled case until Gwyneth Dunwoody, a member of Parliament, decided they looked sad and demanded that they be returned to their native land, where they were originally given by author A.A. Milne to his son Christopher in 1920. The argument played itself out for two days, and even President Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair got into the act, with Blair remarking, "I'm sure they're perfectly well looked-after where they are." Parliament relented February 6, just as Dunwoody announced she would be happy to do battle with New York Mayor Rudolph Guiliani "any day he likes." Posted February 16, 1998. |
