Pennsylvania Governor's Budget Boosts Library Spending by One-ThirdPennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge announced January 22 that his 1998-99 budget would boost state funding for public libraries by $11 million, a 31% increase, with most of the money going to Internet and computer technology. Announcing the proposal at the Abington Community Library in Clark Summit, Ridge said, "By focusing our investment in technology, we will allow our libraries to better link their patrons with resources across town, throughout the commonwealth and around the world," the Philadelphia Inquirer reported January 23. The announcement followed a June Inquirer series that detailed the financial crisis facing the state's libraries. State legislators and librarians are working to overhaul the state's antiquated funding system and provide additional revenues (see American Libraries, Dec. 1997, p. 18-19).
