Las Vegas Board Outsources
Library Management
At its February 12 meeting the Las Vegas–Clark County Library board voted to negotiate with a management firm to run the system while it conducts a nationwide search to replace director Darnel Batson, who was removed from the position January 23.
Not only does the firm—Fair Anderson & Langerman—have no experience running libraries, but the Las Vegas Sun noted February 16 that project manager Carl Rowe had "resigned under pressure" when he headed the Las Vegas Housing Authority in 1994.
The board's action flew in the face of a petition signed by 232 employees demanding the resignation of four board members, which the group ignored. The Sun reported that librarian Mary Rowan called hiring an outside firm unfamiliar with the library profession an "insult to every staff member in this district."
