Anti-ALA Bill Nixed in OklahomaA bill that would have eliminated the ALA-accredited MLS as a requirement for the state and assistant state librarian posts in Oklahoma, as well as for directors of public libraries there, was defeated in committee February 17. Before members of the House County and Municipal Government Committee voted the measure down 6–3, they heard testimony defending the proposal from parent Carol Hefner, who objected to ALA's inclusion of the "Go Ask Alice" site as one of its 700+ Great Sites for Kids. Hefner echoed the concerns of the bill's sponsor, who has asserted that the frank teen discussions of sexuality found there to be proof that ALA promotes pornography, the Daily Oklahoman reported February 18. Oklahoma University library school dean June Lester spoke against the bill. |
