Volusia County Council Mandates Filters Despite Lawyer's AdviceDespite the warnings of Volusia County (Fla.) Attorney Dan Eckert, the county council voted 5-7 on December 3 to have Volusia County Library block online pornography from all public-access machines. The next step, Director Michael Knievel told American Libraries, is to enter discussions with Eckert's office since "I don't know how to lawfully comply" in the wake of Loudoun County (Va.) Library's having a similar filtering policy declared unconstitutional. In making its decision, council members also overrode the advice of VCL trustees, who had declined on September 4 to restrict Internet content despite the sheriff's complaint that former volunteer Stephany Burkard had filed after seeing two patrons looking at "girlie pictures." According to the December 4 Orlando Sentinel, council member Bob Tuttle dared the ACLU to sue over the policy, declaring that "At least our citizens know where the Volusia County elected body stands. Courts change their minds every day, for crying out loud." Posted December 7, 1998. |
