Volusia County Council
May Delete Filtering Order
Less than a month after mandating that Volusia County (Fla.) Library install filters on all its computers, the county council may be about to reverse itself: Two newly elected council members slated to take office in January have indicated that they oppose the use of blocking software on public access machines.
Council member Frank Bruno, who opposes filters in libraries, has indicated he will ask the seven-member body to reconsider its decision immediately after the swearing-in ceremony of incoming council members Big John and Joe Jaynes, since the oaths of office include a pledge to uphold the Constitution. “I don't think I have the right to take away our First Amendment rights for the citizens of Volusia County,” Bruno told the Orlando Sentinel December 12.
Bruno's other apparent ally is council member Pat Northey, who favors filtering only children's-area machines, a recommendation the council had rejected outright.
