Study Finds California Has Nation's Worst Student-Librarian Ratio

A study released December 4 reveals that California ranks last among all states and the District of Columbia in the number of librarians per pupil: only one for every 6,334 students; the national average is one per 885 students.

Conducted by Palo Alto-based EdSource, a nonprofit educational-research group, the study also found that California (which ranks first in the number of students enrolled, 5.6 million) is 50th in teachers and principals per student, and 51st in guidance counselors per student, according to a December 4 San Francisco Examiner story on the survey. The state also ranked 47th in revenue for schools per $1,000 in personal income; unlike most states, the report noted, California's spending on public schools remained virtually flat between 1990 and 1996.

The week before the report's release, Governor-elect Gray Davis said, "Restoring California's schools to greatness will be the cornerstone of my administration."
