Scholastic Donates 50,000+ Books to New York's Reach Out and ReadScholastic Inc., in response to Hillary Rodham Clinton's efforts for early childhood education, announced December 1 an initial gift of 50,000 books to the Reach Out and Read Coalition of Greater New York. Scholastic President Richard Robinson further committed the firm to donate a book for every child newly served by the ROR Coalition for the next five years; 500 books to every coalition location that raises $5,000 locally; and 5,000 books for every $100,000 raised nationally for ROR. The publisher will also expand its multilingual book program with four children's books available in 12 different languages, with English translations on every page. Reach Out and Read is a national pediatric-based early-literacy program designed to encourage at-risk parents to spend time reading aloud to their children. Every child between six months and five years starts with a home library of at least 10 books. Posted December 7, 1998. |
