Rochester's Toy Library to Close by ChristmasFinancial shortfalls are forcing the Rochester (N.Y.) Toy Library, which loaned toys to 12,000 kids and parents last year, to close by Christmas. The Society for the Protection and Care of Children has run the 13-year-old library since December 1994, when its founder, the Junior League of Rochester, could no longer afford it. Only 10% of the library's $100,000 annual budget is covered by fees from its 300 to 350 members, according to a December 10 Associated Press story. Ten to 25% comes from grants and the rest from the nonprofit society. President Kelly A. Reed said that operating costs had begun to eat into the principal of the society's endowment fund. The library's 5,000 dollhouses, plastic kitchen sets, slides, puzzles, games, and other toys that stress creativity may be put back into circulation by the city's public libraries, the AP reported.
