Review to Determine Future of University of Iowa Library SchoolThe School of Library and Information Science is under the microscope at the University of Iowa. SLIS Director Padmini Srinivasan told American Libraries December 3 that the program is undergoing a review to "clarify the school's focus, mission, and relationship with other departments and programs in the university." Admissions are on hold until the review is completed but applications are still being accepted, she said. The SLIS faculty is hopeful admissions will resume quickly enough to avoid a lapse. The review will look at "restructuring the school," Srinivasan said. "It's a reflection of what's happening in the library and information science profession—moving toward greater strength in information science with a foundation in library science." Is restructuring a signal that the ALA-accredited school will drop the word "library" from its title, as a number of schools across the country have done in recent years? "It's a little premature for me to say," Srinivasan said. Posted December 7, 1998. |
