Pennsylvania School Officials Express Concern Over E-Rate

The Pennsylvania Department of Education is the latest to anticipate potential problems in the administration of the e-rate Internet access subsidies that finally arrived this month. In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, the department called on the agency to announce the amount of funding that will be available for the subsidy so that schools can plan accordingly.

According to a December 16 CNet report, PDE Head Eugene Hickok said in the letter, “We feel it was unfortunate that the funding levels were cut for 1998 and that funding priorities were established well after applicants had spent hundreds of hours reading, completing, and correcting application forms, in addition to adjusting or delaying scheduled deployment.” The letter went on, “It falls in the hands of your commission to ensure this does not happen again.”

The window for e-rate applications for 1999–2000 is December 1 through March 11.
