Mainstream Loudoun Receives Downs Intellectual Freedom AwardMainstream Loudoun, plaintiff in the suit that overturned the Loudoun County (Va.) Library's policy requiring Internet filters on all computers at all times, has received the 1998 Robert B. Downs Intellectual Freedom Award. The award, presented by the faculty of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign, acknowledges Mainstream Loudon's commitment to challenging attempts to censor access to information. Additionally, said Dean Leigh S. Estabrook, “our faculty noted the group's emphasis on tolerance and rational discourse. Their consideration for balance in the policy arena is crucial these days.” The group will be honored at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting at a reception co-hosted by the library school and Greenwood Publishing Group on Saturday, January 30. Posted December 21, 1998. |
