Law Library's Proposed Move
Comes Under Attack
A proposal to move the Allegheny County (Pa.) Law Library to the campus of Pittsburgh's Duquesne University and to merge it with that school's law library has come under attack from area judges and lawyers.
County officials are considering moving the 131-year-old law library—among the 10 largest in the country—because they feel it would result in a $550,000 annual savings for the first five years, according to the December 17 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The county would subsidize the joint law library for that time period, after which all subsidies would cease.
The newspaper reported that judges and lawyers, who use the law library in its current location in the City-County Building, have criticized the proposal because the location of the joint law library would hinder their access to legal materials. Opponents have also questioned the wisdom of moving the public materials to the campus of a private university.
