Authorities Consider Preempting Open Access to St. Tammany's VideosTwo months after the St. Tammany (La.) Parish Library Board of Control chose not to restrict minors' access to the library's collection of 354 R and NC-17-rated videos, the parish governing authority seems poised to overrule them. Police Jury Vice President Floyd Glass sponsored an ordinance December 17 that would force library trustees to apply motion-picture rating standards to STPL's video collection. The proposal has been tabled, pending library trustees revisiting the issue January 19. If passed, the law would, in effect, equate circulation desks with movie box offices: Patrons under 17 would only be allowed to borrow an R-rated film if accompanied by an adult. Glass's effort follows a November Board of Control meeting at which area residents protested the trustees' decision not to bar youngsters from mature films in STPL's holdings. In response to citizen concerns, the trustees placed the issue on their January 19 meeting agenda. Ordinance proponents include the parish district attorney. STPL Director Jan Butler told American Libraries he wrote her to support the bill as a prosecutor and a parent. Posted December 28, 1998. |
