Alamo Diary Goes to UT/AustinA controversial diary written by an eyewitness to the Battle of the Alamo in 1836 was donated in late November to the University of Texas/Austin. Charles W. Tate and Thomas O. Hicks, president and chairman of a Dallas-based investment firm, were the two donors who purchased the diary anonymously in a New York auction. UT/Austin was also bidding for the diary at the same time. “We made a huge effort at the auction to bring this manuscript back to Texas,” Director of the UT Center for American History Don E. Carleton told reporters December 15. “We are delighted that these donors have acted so generously.” In acquiring the diary, written by Mexican army officer Jose Enrique de la Peña, the university added to what Carleton termed “the largest and most valuable collection of Texana in existence.” Posted December 21, 1998. |
