The last of four finalists for the position of library director for Ventura County, California, turned down the offer made by library commissioners in early December. After agreeing to an annual salary in the neighborhood of $96,000, the applicant—a library director in Connecticut—and his family decided against leaving the East Coast, according to the December 17 Los Angeles Times.
Interim administrator Richard Rowe told reporters the library will take a new approach by hiring county consultants to restrict the search to California residents. Rowe suspects that some applicants were discouraged when 11 staff positions were cut in March, even though the measure allowed for expanded hours and new books and equipment.
