IMLS Grants Awards to Libraries

The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced $135,366,938 in Library Services and Technology Act grant awards to library agencies nationwide on December 18. The second annual grantmaking round since LSTA was authorized in 1996, the awards will support the use of technology to share information resources and library outreach to underserved urban and rural populations.

Like its Library Services and Construction Act precursor, LSTA makes block grants to state and territorial library agencies, who in turn award project funding to individual libraries. The FY 1999 awards ranged from $14,263,331 to the California State Library to $547,003 to the Vermont Department of Libraries, and are matched by some $1 at the state level for every $3 of federal funds expended.

IMLS has also released guidelines for its second round of National Leadership Grants. Applications for the award, which was launched September 28 with a total of $6.4 million divided among 41 winners, are due March 19.
