£1-Million Shakespeare First Folio StolenA 1623 Shakespeare first folio valued at £1 million and six other centuries-old books were taken from a Bishop Cosin Library display case at England's Durham University around December 10, when their absence was first noted. Staff had been dismantling the exhibit of English literature before Christmas break. Police believe the loss may have gone undetected for several days, the London Telegraph reported, because thieves used light-protective cloths to cover the cabinets they had broken into with a short crowbar. Security staff don't search visitors. Beth Rainey, caretaker of the collection for 30 years, said, “The Shakespeare folio is an extremely significant book for the northeast and for the country. It has been in single ownership since it was published and bought by John Cosin, the Bishop of Durham, between 1660 and 1672. It is irreplaceable.” Among other works stolen: an early handwritten translation of the New Testament from the late 14th century and two works by the 10th-century poet Ælfric printed in 1566 and 1709.
