Second Round of Gates GrantsThe Gates Library Foundation (GLF) announced August 28 that applications for a new round of State Partnership Grants have been distributed to the state library agencies of Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Michigan, Montana, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Nine other states are, or soon will be, receiving funds from the first round of GLF grants. These states were selected based on their poverty levels as determined by the 1990 U.S. Census. The State Partnership Grants are available to all eligible public libraries serving low-income communities to purchase computer equipment and install telecommunications services for Internet access. GLF Director of Library Programs Richard Ackeroyd said the foundation is "on pace to meet our goal of reaching public libraries in all 50 states by 2001." Current applications from state library agencies are due at GLF by October 7. Posted August 31, 1998. |
