Officials Deny Razing Rookery for LibraryFor overseeing the sudden bulldozing of a decades-old Carrollton, Texas, egret rookery on July 23, former Carrollton (Tex.) Public Library Director Beth Little Bormann has been suspended for two weeks from her current post as assistant city manager, along with two other senior-level managers. Bormann's involvement in the incident has raised speculation about the timing of the action, which occurred several days after a consultant recommended the site for an expanded public library, senior center, or mixed-use facility. According to an August 4 Dallas Morning News story, a task force headed by Bormann had previously favored the location. Still, City Council member Mark Stokes insisted it was all a coincidence, especially since it would take some four years to fund a new library. "Even if you knock down the trees, you're going to have to do it all over again in four years." The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department is investigating the incident. Posted August 10, 1998. |
