Mold Threatens 61,000 Books at Arkansas State

An aggressive species of mold that seems to have sprouted within the last few weeks is threatening some 61,000 books over two floors at the Dean B. Ellis Library at Arkansas State University/Jonesboro. The mold was discovered August 24 by an alert student assistant. "We think we can watch it grow," Dean of Libraries Mary Moore told the Jonesboro Sun, noting that the threatened books were valued at some $2.2 million.

Moore stated that the library had two options: the first was spraying with hospital-grade Lysol, the second would be to remove all the items from the library for HEPA filter vacuuming. The first option was exercised by 15 staffers on the same day the mold was discovered. During the next two weeks if new mold growth develops, the more radical alternative will be tried.
