Mason to Leave Cleveland Public LibraryMarilyn Gell Mason will put her 12-year directorship of the Cleveland Public Library behind her next spring when the city's renovated main library opens. Announcing her plan to resign at that time, the 53-year-old Mason said August 5 she will act as a consultant to CPL for three years once a successor has been selected, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. During that period she will work on a doctorate, although she has not yet decided which school to attend. "People believe that the library is more important now than ever," Mason told the paper. Circulation increased from 5 million books and other items in 1988 to 8 million last year. During her tenure voters approved a $90-million proposal for the Louis Stokes Wing that opened last year, smaller branches were replaced with new facilities, and the library started offering electronic services.
