Lack of Funds Keeps LC Metal Detectors Turned Off

Amid heightened security concerns following the July 24 shootings at the Capitol, it was revealed that a lack of funds has kept the metal detectors turned off in the Library of Congress's three buildings, CQ Daily Monitor reported July 29.

Although the funding shortage has kept LC police from staffing the devices, the library hopes to add 13 officers with nearly $1 million in new funding requested in a pending appropriations bill.

"We have a visual and physical inspection of bags . . . but we don't have the staff at the moment to have the metal detectors manned,'' LC spokeswoman Jill Brett told the Associated Press. "Of course, we hope to beef up the security, but I think it's important to stress that the library has many levels of protection in place now,'' Brett said. She added that LC's security director recently met with area police officials to examine security needs.
