Complaints over the availability of pornographic sites on library computer terminals have prompted Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library officials to plan new strategies aimed at curbing access without resorting to the use of Internet filtering software.
Announced August 25 and reported in the Kansas City Star, the proposed changes include: blocking access to history bars, which catalog sites visited by previous users; increasing the precision of searches on the library's Web site; providing an alternative search method that will search only some 5,000 library-approved sites; and posting signs at all Internet terminals telling patrons that some accessible material is illegal in the United States.
The newspaper reported that some detractors are adopting a wait-and-see attitude toward the efforts. In addition to the new recommendations, the library has scheduled Internet training sessions for parents and children at most branches.
