Journalist to Head Québec LibraryLise Bissonnette, publisher of Montréal Le Devoir, has been selected to head the Grande Bibliothèque du Québec, the new $75-million public library slated to open in Montréal, Canada, in 2001. The appointment of the veteran political commentator was announced August 5 in Québec City and quickly called "misguided and an example of political patronage at its worst" by two Québec library associations. Frances Ackerman, a spokesperson for the 230-member Québec Library Association, said in the August 7 Montréal Gazette that Bissonnette could not possibly understand the intricacies of heading up a library without a library background, a view supported by the Bibliothèque Publique de l'Île de Montréal, an association of 25 public libraries. Bissonnette, who has written editorials expressing support for Québec sovereignty, defended her appointment, citing her management skills and bilingualism. Posted August 17, 1998. |
