Houston Powers Up Library Card CampaignHouston Mayor Lee Brown joined Houston Public Library Director Barbara A. B. Gubbin and David McClanahan, president of Houston Industries Inc., in kicking off the Power Card Challenge on July 30, making good on his inaugural promise last January to give library cards to 500,000 school-age children, even if they live outside city limits. Brown told the 350 people jamming the library lobby that it is "better to let our kids find their adventures between the covers of a great book, than from the deadly fumes of a crack pipe." He added that "books were the first rungs on the ladder I, like many others, used to climb out of poverty." Underscoring his commitment to the initiative, Brown added $1.5 million to the library budget over two fiscal years for the purchase of new materials and the addition of 14 new staff positions, said library Public Information Officer Sheryl Berger.
