Gates Foundation Commits $7.25 Million in LouisianaThe Gates Library Foundation announced July 30 that it has committed $7.25 million in cash and software to public libraries in Louisiana. It's the second state to benefit in the foundation's ambitious $400-million plan to computerize public libraries in the United States and Canada over five years. "It's on to Louisiana, then Mississippi, and then [this month] on to the next six states," said GLF President Patty Stonesifer, following the completion of connectivity and training in 250 libraries in Alabama in just six months. Arkansas, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Virginia are targeted next in a strategy that aims first at the poorest states in the country. This is the largest gift of private funds ever received by Louisiana's libraries, said Louisiana State Librarian Tom Jaques. "Adding computers and Internet access as a basic public service will fundamentally improve everyone's access to information." Posted August 3, 1998. |
