Consultant Says Broward County Library Needs a Quarter-BillionA consultant's report states that the Broward County (Fla.) Library System desperately needs at least $250 million worth of building improvements, as well as the construction of 18 new branches. The study by Providence Associates, which was funded by the Broward County Commission, will help inform an August 25 meeting on whether to turn the recommendation into a November bond issue. Several officials seemed reluctant to okay such a large request. "It's one thing to repair and renovate, but the real question is the ongoing maintenance of new libraries," Commissioner John Rodstrom told the Miami Herald July 29, alluding to a section of the report that cautioned officials, "If you cannot maintain them, do not build them." More seemed agreeable to increasing the materials budget, though perhaps not by the $16.8 million Providence Associates recommended. Ironically, County Administrator Roger Desjarlais has called for a $645,000 cut. Posted August 3, 1998. |
