Children's Reading Giant Mildred Batchelder Dies at 96Influential advocate for children's reading and books for young adults Mildred L. Batchelder died August 25 at the age of 96. She was a resident of the Swedish Retirement Association home in Evanston, Illinois. A champion of international relations, Batchelder was honored in 1966 when the American Library Association established the Mildred L. Batchleder Award to recognize quality children's books in translation. Batchelder retired from ALA in 1966 after 30 years of leadership in the Association's children's divisions. Former ALA Executive Director Peggy Sullivan said Batchelder was "a great mentor for a lots of librarians new to the children's field" and "she led the way in incorporating nonprint materials into libraries." Batchelder's lifetime companion Margaret Nicholsen, also a resident of the Swedish home, said donations in memory of her friend may be sent to the Kerlan Children's Literature Research Center at the University of Minnesota Libraries in Minneapolis.
