Alumna Leaves Windfall
to University of Nebraska/Lincoln

The Board of Regents for the University of Nebraska/Lincoln approved a plan on August 25 that will transfer a whopping $125 million gift from the estate of alumna Mildred Topp Othmer to the campus. Some 75% of the income from the resulting Othmer-Topp Endowment is being split between technology upgrades to the libraries, an expansion of Love Library, and improvements to the chemical engineering program, UNL spokesperson Dara Troutman told the Omaha Daily Nebraskan August 20.

Othmer, who died in April, and her late husband Donald are 1920s graduates of UNL who made their fortune investing with renowned Omaha mogul Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway holding company. Also included as beneficiaries of the $570 million estate is Planned Parenthood of New York, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Omaha Board of Education, and surviving descendants—one of whom lost a court challenge contesting the will's validity.
