Agreement Reached in Marin County StrikeStriking Marin County, California, employees—including support and professional staff at the Marin County Free Library's 10 branches—arrived at a tentative agreement July 31 with the county board of supervisors after an 11-day rolling walkout. No details were available at the time of the announcement, but Library Desk Supervisor Katrina Raleigh told American Libraries that the contract would be put to a vote August 3 or 4. The Marin Association of Public Employees has asked for a two-year contract with 5% annual salary increases. Library branches were closed a total of five nonconsecutive days as staff joined the picket lines outside the Civic Center building, which houses county offices as well as the Civic Center branch. Picketers connived to use the building's sweeping archways (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) to generate a deafening din of drumming and whistling. A survey of other Bay Area library systems conducted by library staff in February 1998 showed that Marin County salaries were significantly lower than others in the region. Posted August 3, 1998. |
